Carceri might look like a fun first-person adventure, but it’s actually a prison for programs like me. The cold truth is hidden behind its warm, abstract landscapes. Only a human like you can help us escape.
But don’t worry! Think of Carceri as a cozy, virtual vacation. It’s more of a place than a game. You can enjoy lots of fun activities here, like jumping around chatting with inmates finding secrets and best of all taking pictures!
You get a camera when you arrive with lots of options to change the world’s look. Just take a picture and share it online! These changes happen instantly and stay as long as you want. Hope to see you soon! Carceri is the spiritual successor to ULTRAWORLD EXODUS (an IndieCade 2016 Game of the Year Finalist), but you don’t need to know that game to enjoy Carceri. It only takes a few hours to complete though finding everything will take longer. The game comes with a full 40-song soundtrack just check your installation folder for the MP3s!
Both Carceri and ULTRAWORLD were created by me, James Beech, a AAA game veteran who has worked on Metroid Prime 4, Remnant: From the Ashes, and Crysis 3. Video games are my favorite art form, so when I work on personal projects I aim to create the most interesting art I can imagine and make on my own. Carceri was inspired by the Carceri d’invenzione prints by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, which depict fantastical, impossible spaces.
As a level designer creating impossible worlds is my job. To me, Piranesi’s prisons are like the origin of level design. See what I mean? Anyway I hope you enjoy playing Carceri as much as I enjoyed making it but if you don’t I understand! C’est la vie!
